JOHN WARD (piano)
Swing jazz is probably my favourite music genre but I love all music from classical to rock’n’roll. Trained in my early teens on the piano and trumpet I progressed to study at the Trinity College of Music (piano and trumpet) where my understanding of music as an art-form began to develop. My dad (a brilliant jazz pianist) ran a small dance band and I played for him from the age of 13 (guitar and trumpet) but slowly the guitar took priority (I blame rock’n’roll). I love it and still do.
In my early days as a player, pianos available for a gigging musician were not good so I played guitar and bass (pop, rock and jazz) with a whole variety of bands. Pianos now are digital and portable so I can fall back to my original instrument which now takes priority. My guitar and bass do get regularly used (I play an instrument of some kind most days just for fun). I can’t play them all at once but with my Jazz/Swing trio (piano, bass and drums) I can have some fun with the piano and with my good friend Tony Romero.
